The manor house of Brookmans, which burnt down in 1891, was formerly the home of one of "the five tyrannizing lords" who "virtually ruled England for five years".
John Somers (1651 – 1716) who became 1st Baron Somers, served as Lord High Chancellor of England under William III and Lord President of the Council under Queen Anne.
