‘Milkman of the Year’ John Swain on his round in 1986 Image courtesy of the Express Dairy magazine |
In 1986 John Swain from Welham Green was voted Express Dairy ‘Milkman of the Year’. He'd been delivering milk to customers in Brookmans Park for 46 years having started his round on 1 August 1940 aged 15.
In 1990, John retired having served the community for 50 years.
A feature about the milkman of the year award appeared in the September 1986 issue of the Chancellor’s Community Newsletter. Four years later, the same publication published an article about John Swain's retirement in the November 1990 issue. The articles have been reproduced here with permission of the publisher.
We have also included a feature about the milkman of the year award from the Express Dairy Magazine autumn 1986 issue. Click on the images below for larger versions.
