Lewis Cream Line Coaches  - a local pioneer

Joe Lewis must have been a man with foresight. From his car hire firm in Potters Bar he started a coach service in 1925 from Brookmans Park to London (see image above). By September 1930 he was running eight daily journeys from Mymms Drive to Charing Cross. 1s 3d (7p) single, 2s (10p) return, with weekly season tickets Monday to Saturday at 10s (50p). He applied for more journeys and, although backed by Barnet Urban District Council, his application was opposed by Green Line Coaches Ltd and the London & North Eastern Railway. The vehicles were garaged at Hill Rise, Potters Bar. The route was taken over by London Transport in August 1950.

"Riding down to Brighton in a charabanc
Fifty miles an hour and we don't care a hang
We don't envy those big Rolls-Royces
Singing a song at the top of our voices
Though it shakes your liver up you need not fear
The engines full of petrol and the driver's full of beer
Driving down to Brighton in a charabanc."
